I said goodbye to my hosts this morning and made my way to Bryce Canyon National Park. I’ll spend the night here before heading home tomorrow.
Sally woke yesterday with a banger of a migraine headache (fortunately, she rallied later in the day, and we all enjoyed a marvelous Italian meal at Cappeletti’s in downtown Saint George), so Jeff and I did a brief tour of nearby Snow Canyon before heading for Sunbrook Golf Club.
Sunbrook is one of four courses run by the city of Saint George, and prior to the recent golf course construction boom in the area, was considered to be the best public track in Utah. While the setting is not quite as dramatic as Sky Mountain or Falcon Ridge, the quality of golf is excellent. There are three nines at Sunbrook; we played the Woodbridge and Point, both of which provided outstanding challenge while not having one feeling like he’s been pummeled by a bunch of Smokin’ Joe Frazier body shots.
We were joined by a father/son duo of Tyler and Ryan, who were visiting from Salt Lake City with their family.
“The ladies went hiking today, so we’re playing golf,” proclaimed Tyler, a man who hit the ball a mile and who could honestly say that he hadn’t missed a meal since the second grade.
His son Ryan seemed to be relatively new to the game, but when he connected, he too could send the ball a long way. Unfortunately, he was also somewhat directionally challenged, as Jeff estimated that he hit at least six houses during the course of the round.
The signature hole at Sunbrook is the 8th on the Woodbridge nine, a par three that features an island green. While the shot is not quite as intimidating at the 17th at TPC Sawgrass, both Jeff and I saw our tee shots bounce off the rough to the right of the green and in to the pond.

Despite this, we both actually played some decent golf, and of course, there was always the surrounding landscape to help us keep perspective.

Jeff and I have a regular game at Haymaker in Steamboat Springs during the summer with several other friends, while Sally will often tee it up with my sister Lisa on Ladies Night. Haymaker is still a good month or so away from opening, while I still hold some hope for Steamboat Golf Club opening by mid April. Thanks to my friends, I’m now officially chomping at the bit for our season to begin.
Much love to you guys.
I may have told you I moved to Colorado after school to ski. Gerald Ford was just making Vail a year round destination. I really must get back out there now that I have a golf game of sorts (I know that's just taunting the golf gods...). We're doing a trip to Michigan in August. How late in the season is your course open?
